HAPPY TODAY AND THE 364 DAYS TO COMEP POR EDUARDO OWEN
Fairfield
Dawn
A quarter past four
First of January 2011
A brand new year
A Christmas tree
Without a “use by” date
Watches me write this poem
From a corner of the room
A few dozen agonising flowers
Fight off death
With water up to their waists
In a blue glass vase that sits on an ancient coffee table
Outside
The sky keeps shining its darkness
Over the roofs of the houses and the buildings
(The streets the gardens and the tree tops as well)
After the celebrations
The many glasses of “champagne”
The nice food
The good wishes
The kisses and the hugs
And the fire works
All the neighbourhood eyelids
Have retired to their fleshy beds
To sleep and dream in their different languages
The dawn and me
Alone and lonely
(Lonely and alone)
Wish each other
A very happy today
And the 364 days to come...
